Bloomin’ great result for local Daffodil Day appeal

daffodil day crowd 2015-264Once again the generous people of Mangawhai and Kaiwaka have made a huge contribution to the Northland Cancer Society.

Money raised during August is used in the Northland Region to give help and support to cancer patients and also assist with accommodation when necessary at Domain Lodge in Auckland.

Each year the caring community of Mangawhai-Kaiwaka show their generosity and support and this year has been no exception with an amazing $8,200 being raised for the 2015 Daffodil Day Cancer Society Appeal. This included the street collection, donation boxes at local businesses, voucher raffle and the morning tea.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported this very worthy cause.

The annual morning tea was held on Wednesday August 26, when once again a great crowd came along for morning tea mixed with Bingo and some raffles. The Mangawhai Golf Club was looking very spring-like with yellow tablecloths, balloons, bunting, windmills and of course Daffodils. Lots of fun and confusion ensured everyone enjoyed themselves and a grand total of $3,600 was collected. Thank you to all whose who came to make this morning so successful.

Each and every one of us has been affected by cancer, directly or indirectly. It’s sad to say that one in three people get cancer. If there is anyone out there who has not been affected by cancer then you are extremely lucky.

Is this the reason why Mangawhai people “dig deep” each year to support this worthy cause or is it because they are the most generous people in New Zealand?

Local businesses always step up by putting the donation boxes in a visible position so thank you for your continued support.

Also a huge thank you to all the volunteers at the 4 Square stores in Mangawhai and Kaiwaka and a special thanks to Gay Young and her team for organising the appeal in Kaiwaka. Conditions sometimes make it unpleasant but they still turn up year after year.

As this is my last year as co-ordinator I wish to thank my team of dedicated helpers, most have been here with me for many years. They include Val and Rob Cleaver, Pat and David Scott, Jean Goldschmidt, Julia Sutherland, Ted Tuffey, Neville and Nicolette Franks, Judy and Bill Butterfield, Maxine McDonald, Susan Egerton, Bronwyn Heasman, Joy Wilson, and Barb Lambert. Without their support, especially for the morning tea, this event would never happen.

Also, a special mention of our sponsors, some who have been around since day one. A huge thank you!

I have enjoyed the last 11 years organising this appeal and do hope someone will come forward to volunteer for 2016. Please just give me a call on 431 5950 or call Leann at Northland Cancer Society 0800 366066. I will still be available to advise/help if necessary.

- Dorothy Freeman

SUPPORT: A big crowd at the popular Daffodil Day morning tea.
