Speech win feather in cap for studentRodney College student Nadine Tupp has won the south zone final of the Rotary Secondary School speech competition held at the Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club tea meeting on Tuesday August 25, winning the judges over with a passionate address about climate change. Four finalists, including Rita Hames (Otamatea High School), Sean Dugdale-Martin and Phoenix Reese-Barker (Mahurangi College), gave 7-10 minute speeches. Contestants were also judged on a short impromptu speech with the subject being “Should New Zealand change its flag?” The main speech is worth 75 percent of the marks and the impromptu 25 percent. The Rotary Club of Whangarei started the competition in 1961 when the late Hugh Rishworth, a past president of the club, donated a cup as a prize for the winner of the speech contest, now sponsored by WRMK Lawyers, Whangarei. A prestigious annual event and a challenge for senior students throughout Northland, the specific aim of the contest is to promote the art of public speaking among young people in Northland and all secondary schools are encouraged to participate. Nadine received a $100 book voucher and the opportunity to go on to compete with the winners of four other Northland zones on September 23 in Whangarei. The Northland winner will win $1000 to go towards furthering their education. ALL TALK: Rotary zone speech competition winner Nadine Tupp now heads to the Northland finals. |
