Wellsford hardware and garden centre open

 

The long trip to Warkworth to pick up hardware supplies or pop into the garden centre is a thing of the past for locals with Wellsford Hammer Hardware opening on Station Road last month.

Taking over the former bus depot, owners Mitch and Rebecca Martin have completely refurbished the property into a retail store with ample street parking and easy access. The store will stock a range of hardware, paint, power tools and homewares, as well as a dedicated garden centre.

“There was no hardware store in Wellsford, so we saw it as an opportunity to serve our community, bringing something here that’s of need,” says Mitch. “We’re going to be on the shop floor every day, and we’re looking forward to getting to know more members of our community and helping them with their home improvement projects.”

“We’ve already had a hugely positive response from the community when we’ve shared our plans and had some great feedback on what locals wanted to see in the store, so we’re really looking forward to finally being open,” says Rebecca.

The Martins moved to Wellsford four years ago; they love living in the area and plan to retire there. They bought the retail space a year ago and responded to an advert looking for people to open Hammer Hardware stores – a perfect fit for Mitch.

“I’ve always loved exploring hardware stores,” says Mitch. “My kids have me on about going to the hardware store because every time we go out, we go to a hardware store. I really enjoy exploring the aisles and products. I come from a practical background; as well as working on offshore oil rigs, I’ve been a painter-decorator for 10 years and I’ve renovated a couple of houses, so I’ve spent a lot of time in hardware stores. This is an extension on all of that.” 

Hammer Hardware is a New Zealand owned and operated retail cooperative that’s been in operation for more than 30 years. There are over 50 stores throughout New Zealand.
