Switch off and give the planet a restJULIA WADE People around the globe are willing to plunge themselves into darkness for an hour soon in an effort to illuminate the plight of the earth’s environment. Earth Hour 2021, held on March 27, 8.30pm-9.30pm, is a one-hour lights-off event held every year, and celebrated by millions around the globe who switch off unnecessary electrical items in an effort to protect the world and encourage individuals to be accountable for their ecological footprint. First initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007 which saw over two million people in Sydney join the initiative, WWF New Zealand CEO Livia Esterhazy says 2021 is ‘a pivotal year’ due to the government intending to make key decisions on the climate and nature. “For them to take action, we need people to join us in sending a message they cannot ignore,” she says. “We all have a crucial role to play which is why we’re reaching out to businesses, organisations, schools, and communities to show widespread support for action this Earth Hour. Together we can make a statement seen around the world – and make 2021 a year of hope and action.” n Interested in signing up for Earth Hour to send a message calling for urgent action on climate change?
