A solid crowd gathered under a bright Anzac Day sky at Hakaru’s RSA on April 25, to pay respects and honour those who gave their life and service for freedom for all.
Returned Service men and women, along with representatives from Royal NZ Army, Airforce and Navy, local Police, St Johns, Women’s Institute, Council members, Scouts and local schools, all laid wreaths at the Cenotaph under the watchful guard of Mangawhai’s Cadets. The succinct yet auspicious ceremony, ended with the poignant melody of the Last Post, silence and prayer.

1: Traditional and emotive, bagpipes lead the long line of past and present service officers towards the Cenotaph.
2: Humbling moment for members of St John’s youngest group, the Penguins.
3: With salutes of respect, two former servicemen remember their fallen comrades.
5: The haunting tune of ‘The Last Post’ elicits a solemn and reflective silence especially for the older generation of servicemen and women.
6: Adorned with remembrance; Hakaru’s Cenotaph stands as a reminder that we shall not forget.
