New rules for old bridgeBY JULIA WADE
One of Mangawhai’s long-time favourite summer pastimes, especially for younger residents, is now no more due to the activity being considered too risky. Molesworth Bridge on the causeway often attracts people looking for the thrill of jumping from the rail into the cool waters of the estuary, an activity locals have enjoyed for many years. However Kaipara District Council (KDC) has recently positioned signs banning diving and jumping from the busy bridge. Social media discussions show a mixed reaction from locals, with some feeling it is an over-reaction while others agree with the ban. KDC spokesperson Ben Hope says there were a number of reasons why the council decided to notify against the activity and install the signs. “We received numerous complaints from the public who want to stop people jumping off the bridge, including concern that kids standing on the left hand side rail could fall back into the lanes and this was quite dangerous,” he says. “The signs have also been requested by the police.” Preventative measures on the right hand side of the bridge were already in place as there is no pathway between the rail and road, deeming the side hazardous for jumpers. <<caption>> A sign of the times: Mangawhai’s population growth and increased traffic are probable factors for the popular jumping spot to be deemed unsafe. – PHOTO/JULIA WADE |
