Poetry comp closes soon
The Kauri Museum is celebrating Phantom National Poetry Day with a poetry competition for residents of the Kaipara and Northland Districts aged 18 and over. This is the third year the museum has held the competition, which is free to enter. With the theme ‘On the Shores of the Kaipara’, entries are due by August 14. Finalists will be announced August 20 with the winner announced on Phantom National Poetry Day August 27 at a live performance event at the Kauri Museum. The event has a $5 entry. Second album for metal stars
International heavy metal stars, Waipu’s Alien Weaponry, have announced the release of their second album, Tangaroa, out September 17 via Napalm Records. Their acclaimed 2018 debut, Tu, with lyrics in te reo Maori, attracted throngs of fans and media supporters across the globe. Much of Tangaroa is immersed in the historical stories and culture of the group’s Maori heritage, personal struggle and growth, and covers environmental topics like climate change and illegal fishing practices. The group want to raise awareness by also supporting the work of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
AG Day experience
Mangawhai Beach School Ag Day is on October 28 and open to all students who want to raise a calf, lamb, goat kid (subject to numbers), or chicken. A South Auckland contact is offering to supply ram lambs while local dairy farmer Bruce Nelder is offering the chance for kids to raise a calf on his farm that he will deliver on the day.
