Band aiming for national titleIt was an afternoon of high caliber music and piping when the Northland Caledonian Pipe Band (formerly the Whangarei and County Pipe Band) held a concert in the new Celtic Barn in Waipu last Sunday. Bain Mcgregor and Neil Mogey put together an enjoyable and satisfying mix of both traditional and modern Scottish and Celtic compositions. The concert was a fundraiser for the band who will be performing at four major contests over the next five months as a lead-up to the nationals in Fielding in March 2016. The band came in second place in Grade 2 at Nelson last year; a worthy result they are hoping to better. However attending all these events is not a cheap exercise, with the Celtic Harmonies Concert in the Barn forming one of a number of planned fundraisers. There are 13 young members under the age of 17 in the band which has a playing strength of 35. Pictured are some junior band members.
