Facelift for grand old ladyTrue to the edict that history repeats, the historic Mangawhai Tavern is now under new ownership.
Two of the new owners, Rick Smith and cousin Angela Ferrier, have a deep connection with the tavern, with their grandparents being former owners, and Rick’s parents also ran it for a time after them. The pair have fond memories of the tavern which – in its heyday, with its picturesque waterfront location – was the popular place for locals to meet and relax. Along with their business partners, Rick and Angela are excited about the changes they plan to make in returning the tavern to being a vibrant part of the community. “I remember when the tavern was the focal point for people in the community to meet and chat over a few beers,” says Rick. “We are conscious that with competition and changes in drink driving laws that the tavern now has to offer more to attract people. We will be providing that with renovations to the tavern, in stages, plus better food and a better wine selection. By providing the community with a better experience over-all, we are hopeful of returning the tavern to something like its former position in the community that I remember.” As part of these changes, the new owners have appointed a new manager in Fred Bayer, an experienced hotel manager who shares the new owners’ vision for the tavern. The new owners are all passionate about Mangawhai and the local area and share a common vision to re-establish the tavern as a great place to dine, enjoy a wine or beer, and listen to music. All are hugely excited about the venture and extend a warm welcome to everyone. |
