Local Vocals sing for freedomThe Local Vocals Choir are getting ready for another exciting opportunity for the wider community to participate in a 10 week series with contracted choir master Max Maxwell, with the theme Songs of Freedom.
The Local Vocals Choir (LVC) developed from the original Wellsford Community Choir project with a 10 week singing series funded by Creative Communities Auckland in late 2012. The popular four part harmony singing project concluded with a very successful community performance at the Wellsford District Community Centre in November 2012. Choir members came from the extended Wellsford area, drawing people of all ages from Matakana, Leigh, Warkworth, Wellsford, Kaipara Flats, Kaiwaka, and Mangawhai. Following on from this success came another series in July last year, again funded generously by Creative Communities and led by Max Maxwell. The 2013 singing series’ focus was on developing emergent leadership from within the choir with Denis Newhook learning under Max’s guidance. The success of this mentoring partnership has given the The Local Vocals Choir strength and confidence. “I believe anybody can sing and it is a vital ingredient for healthy living,” says Denis Newhook. “One of my goals with the choir is to keep nurturing a safe and supportive environment where people feel free to sing.” The choir committee have applied for more funding this year. Says president Sally Randall: “Our theme this year of ‘Songs of Freedom’ embraces a very uplifting and positive range of songs, with music styles from around the world. Funding allows us to offer each session for just a gold coin donation. We want to strengthen our community spirit and inspire as many people as we can with our love of singing. All are invited to join us and enjoy the 2014 LVC singing journey. I know the concert will warm hearts and lift any winter blues in the audience too!” Max Maxwell from SingforJoy Auckland has a passion for bringing people together to create harmony and rhythm in song. “All are welcome - we all have a voice, and to sing in harmony with a group of others often inspires confidence and brings great joy,” says Max. No singing experience is needed and there are no auditions. The 2014 LVC series begins Sunday May 4, running 10 consecutive weeks every Sunday 3-5pm at the Wellsford District Community Centre, finishing with a concert on Sunday July 6. Max will again be offering ukulele classes which will run over the same 10 week period, before the choir sessions.
