T.Rex getting attentionChildren today are very familiar with the monstrous dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex having seen him in TV documentaries, story books, jigsaw puzzles and animated movies and he holds few fears for them. But few have been up close and personal to the one created by Waipu driftwood sculptor Greg Maddox.
Though this one doesn’t quite reach the 6-metre height of his pre-historic brothers he is certainly an imposing figure, especially if seen peeping in through your kitchen window. After delivering ‘Woody’ the Raptor to Wellington, Greg at Tapatai Driftwood Creations wanted to create something bigger. So, meet Rex the T. rex. He's 5.2 metres long and 2.2 metres wide. “He made the ‘cool auctions’ page on Trade Me with over 25,000 views, was mentioned on Radio Live and we just had a call from TV1’s Seven Sharp wanting to come and check him out and see what all the fuss is about,” says Gregs partner Sarah Archer. He has also been creating a stir on social networks. Greg’s sculptures are literally flying out the door and the couple are looking to create more to enhance peoples gardens, wineries, museums and lifestyle blocks. Recently finished projects are a German Shepherd dog for a breeder in Whangarei and a weta for a client from the far north, plus various garden chairs and benches. Other works include an emu, a moa, a crocodile and an imposing study of an eagle. You can check out more of their work on their facebook page 'Tapatai Driftwood Creations'. BIG FUSS: Met Rex, the latest amazing driftwood creation by Waipu artist Greg Maddox. |
