Artists exhibit together for the first timeFour artists with four distinctive styles – Wendy Leach, Nicola Everett, Bineta Hinton and Lynn Middleton – are experienced artists who are exhibiting together for the first time.
Each artist has contributed large, bold works in their own expressive style, currently showing at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery until Sunday May 12. Bineta says her work has grown out of her passion for ‘our land and our people, past and present’. “These paintings are about the ones that have gone before, their beliefs and the richness in their myths.” The essence of Wendy’s work is spontaneity, being physical – paint poured, sprayed, splattered, flicked. Her artistic practice involves re-working and building paint, allowing earlier layers to peep through and evolve. “I explore the possibilities of working with opposites: underlay/overlay, conceal/reveal, absence/presence, opaque/translucent.” Nicola continues her creative exploration of the local environment and “the balance of nature and how humans have altered it - to a point of no return.” “My current work is dealing with balance and disruption, both environmental and personal.” Nicola is a strong environmental advocate. Lynn looks at the world close to home, looking for nature’s patterns, repeating lines and shapes, then makes images in still life. In this exhibition her images build on a rich artistic history of drawing throughout time where artists use whatever they have close to hand. “I like to experiment with what is close to hand. Today, in this digital world, my iPhone is my artist notebook, an app and a screen is my paper, and my fingers are my pencils and brushes.” An exhibition of strong, bold, and interesting art work, the artists will be staffing the gallery 10am to 3pm daily and look forward to talking to people about their work. Large Works, Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai Village. Open 7 days, 10am – 3pm. Free entry. |
