Show of hands wanted for sign language classesDeaf Aotearoa is once again holding free New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Taster Classes as part of New Zealand Sign Language Week 2013, May 13-19. Now in its seventh year, NZSL Week raises awareness about New Zealand’s Deaf community and promotes NZSL, one of the official languages of New Zealand. The NZSL Taster Classes will be held in schools, healthcare providers and businesses, with those registering receiving resources to display and use. Deaf Aotearoa NZSL Taster Classes are extremely popular and only a limited number can be delivered, so now is the time to register. Deaf Aotearoa also has a range of downloadable resources to promote NZSL Week 2013 and its online shop www.shop.deaf.org.nz sells NZSL T-Shirts, tool kits, booklets and other resources. New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week is run annually by Deaf Aotearoa to promote NZSL as an official language of New Zealand and raise awareness about the deaf community. The week includes free sign language classes as well as a range of national and regional events and school-based activities. Deaf Aotearoa is the national service provider for deaf people in New Zealand. It works with deaf communities and provides information and resources on a range of services. Deaf Aotearoa also works closely with government agencies, other not-for-profit organisations and the corporate sector to increase awareness of deaf people’s lives, promote New Zealand Sign Language and reaffirm the rights of deaf people. Deaf Aotearoa is a Disabled Person’s Organisation and the New Zealand representative for the World Federation of the Deaf, the international body for Deaf people.
