Weed Action's free weed bin is back again for 2023

PIORA BRYNDERWYNS LANDCARE

Doc1-page-001-65227 Mar, 2023

The good news is that Weed Action’s bin for bad environmental weeds is back in Mangawhai, but only for a few weeks because after the cyclone bins are very sought after.

This is a great opportunity for gardeners to get rid of really ‘bad’ weeds free of charge and help prevent their spread into the beautiful Brynderwyns bush and surrounds.

The bin will be at Wyatt’s Landscaping Supplies from March 16 until April 10 – but is only for the really ‘bad’ weeds. It’s not for flax, bamboo or palm leaves (which all clog up the mulcher), or for grass clippings or general veggie garden weeds. It’s for the disposal of weeds like moth plants, tobacco weed, boneseed, wild jasmine, weedy wattles, ginger, arum lilies and even agapanthus. Yes, the big agapanthus is on the baddies list. It spreads like wildfire down our roads and through the dunes and dry coastal areas on the wind.

We haven’t been able to have the weed bin for 18 months because of covid. This year we are hoping for even more landowners to get serious about environmental weeds, such as those planted as garden ornamentals by the early residents back in the day. A lot of us are cleaning up our properties after the cyclone and heavy rain and will be collecting a lot of bad weeds which need to be disposed of correctly.

Sometimes we don’t associate what we do in our backyard with what happens away over in the hills. When rats, stoats and possums are controlled there, not only do we have more kiwi surviving but other birds as well. Those that fly back and forth between town and bush can carry weed seeds from our backyards for long distances. The bigger the bird the further the seed is spread.

So, get into the garden while you still can and rip out the moth plants, wattle, arum lilies, and other baddies. Take them to Wyatts Landscaping Supplies and bin the lot for free!
