Knitted Knockers a knockoutTorbay grandmothers Christina Kilfoyle, left, and Marie Hindmarsh are knitting woollen boobs to serve as an alternative to prosthetics for women who have undergone mastectomies. Their little business, called Knitted Knockers, is a move away from the usual cardigans and beanies – they knit prosthetic breasts for mastectomy patients.Made from wool and stuffed with polyfill, when placed in a bra, these knitted breasts take the shape and feel of the real thing yet are lighter and more comfortable than a silicone prosthetic. The knitted fabric breathes and prevents the heat rash and discomfort experienced by many women and are proving a great psychological aid to women who have recently undergone surgery. The idea was sparked by a post on the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation Facebook page and the pair now have knitters all around the country making their own or contributing to the free service for other women. They can provide patterns if required. Call Marie on (09) 473 5888 or Christina on (09) 473 6622 if you want to get involved. |
