Youth high priority for rotary ClubMaungaturoto & Districts Rotary Club were given presentations from students that the club has helped at their recent meeting.
Brooklyn Wilson from Mangawhai Primary has travelled to an international conference in Iowa, coming third in a problem solving competition. Brooklyn started the project of developing the area by the boat ramp at Ruawai when she was 10 years old. Two years later this took her to the US, and she says Rotary made the difference in getting her there. Erin Mooney and Ruby-Rose Hallimore from Otamatea, supported by Maungaturoto Opportunity Shop and Maungaturoto & Districts Rotary, attended a Rotary NorthTec Science and Technology Programme held over the school holidays at the NorthTec Raumanga Campus. Both gave the club an excellent account of their experience. Further opportunities for youth will be the Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club President’s Scholarship. A grant of $1,000 is given to support a student currently attending a tertiary course or is planning to in the short-term. The student should live in the area – Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Waipu. Criteria that will be taken into consideration includes involvement in community work, achievement in sports or art, academic achievement, academic ambition and financial need. Candidates may be current students in the area’s sec-ondary schools but may also be a young person from the community who is planning to return to education. Entry forms available from schools or from Maungaturoto & Districts Rotary Club, PO Box 65, Maungaturoto. |
