An annual winter sortie for Whangarei Rod and Custom Club members was extended somewhat this year when they formed a cavalcade and headed out to Mangawhai “just for something a bit different” said club president Don Ross.
“Lot of the guys hadn’t been out there,” he added “and there are petrolheads all over the place who love the opportunity to look and talk cars, plus, if it’s of interest to the general public then that’s even better.”
For enthusiasts their cars rank right up there with the wife and the kids when it come to showering attention on them, and many of the wives and partners are every bit as adept with a torque wrench as they are a kitchen wizz.
The run left from One Tree Point, marshalled at the MPL yards on Mangawhai Road before cruising around the beach, up Wood Street,
along Molesworth Drive before settling down for a bit of R&R at the Mangawhai Tavern where local petrolheads and wannabes came out of the woodwork to appease their addictions. They were also joined by cars from the near south to make a total in excess of 60 vehicles of all denominations.
With their attention on the usual Saturday morning markets, many members of the public missed the opportunity to get a good look at the cavalcade. However, as this could become an annual event, without making things too formal it would be good to raise the profile with added attractions and make the event more of a winter highlight – weather permitting.
