Popular potter and local identity Gary Smith (pictured) has been looking for a change of scenery so is on the move this month.
“I am in Mangawhai to stay!” assures Gary, as Mangawhai Pottery, under his traditional Blue Fish sign, is about to find a new home in Insley St at the Village.
After Returning to Mangawhai in December 2009 and opening his new shop, Mangawhai Pottery, a year later, Gary finds himself on the move once again but to a more accessable location adjacent to the hall and virtually a part of the weekly Saturday markets.
In high demand, each piece Gary makes is handcrafted and unique, and functional – perfect as a gift for almost any occasion.
Since his visit to Spain, Gary has excelled himself in the creation of large earthenware pieces in the beautiful traditional Spanish decorative glaze colours of green and turquoise, refreshingly contrasting with his traditional blue and white stoneware.
Gary says it was important for him to raise his profile and connect with his customers so moving his studio was an exciting move.
“It’s all about the journey and this is just another new beginning and another new exciting experience. It is also all about the people without whom this would be a fruitless endeavour.”
