At the July Probus meeting Annette Sicily introduced mini speaker, Rob Pooley, who gave us some background on his earlier life – dairy farming, started up the first national motorhome magazine, and in 2005 was approached to assist in organising a local paper for Mangawhai – now known as The Mangawhai Focus of which Rob is editor and part of the family team. Two decades of museum service Following afternoon tea, main speaker for the day was Betty Nelley, CEO of the Kauri Museum. Betty grew up in Kauri, north of Whangarei, and on leaving school worked for the Whangarei County Council, became a farmer’s wife in Mangakahia, then shifted to Hokianga where children went to the local school and she became the school librarian. Moving to Maungaturoto, Betty had a job in the local Otamatea Vet Clinic and then became involved at the Kauri Museum and arranged photographs, the library and archives. She is now the well known CEO who has worked 18 years at the museum, with passionate dedication. A very busy lady with a very, very Interesting life. Next Meeting Next meeting Thursday August 15. All visitors are welcome, and if you are new to the Mangawhai Community, please join us on the third Thursday of each month, 2pm Senior Citzens Hall, Mangawhai. - Gaylene Lawrence, Secretary |
