Squash team heads to nationalsStepping out of the shadows, Maungaturoto’s D grade squash team has won a tough elimination series that has seen them qualify for a trip to Tauranga to compete at the Nationals, August 20-25.
The local club will run an ‘It’s In The Bag’ fundraising night on August 17, 7pm at the Maungaturoto Country Club to help towards accommodation and costs. “We have had some large donations for our prize boxes,” says team manager Mike Schimanski. These include a dinner/breakfast/accommodation/package at Paihia including a tour to the Hole in the Rock and Dolphin viewing trip, a scenic flight for five around the Kaipara Harbour sponsored by Go North Scenic Flights, several sports packages, vouchers from Fergus Appliances and Dreams, and plenty of giveaways. More donations of prizes would be most welcome. “This is a big deal for a small community,” says Mike. “The last national representation was a mens team who played at Invercargill in 2001, but in true community spirit locals are showing a lot of support.” The Maungaturoto Squash Club is a long-established amenity with a strong base and currently over 80 members. |
