Cycle race gains popularityThe Fred Ogle bike race is held in memory of the avid cyclist, fitness enthusiast, and road safety advocate killed by a hit-and-run driver. The 110 kilometre event has been run six times with entries increasing each year and this year attracted several top riders who had recently competed in the Tour of Southland. Former subway-Avanti rider Nick Lovegrove had won the event the past three years but missed the podium this time after puncturing. With some better riders competing the racing was far more intense this year with many recording personal best times for the distance. Elite Auckland rider Morgan Smith was first over the line in 2h 49.59m. Whangarei’s Sam Warriner won the women’s race in 2h 55.47m. Pictured is Josh Eagle (14) of Rodney College who competed in the U19 section where he placed third, and 42 out of 125 riders overall. |
