New cycle club makes big impression

Around eighteen months ago The Focus reported on internationally renowned mountain biker Sadie Parker opening a cycle spin class in Mangawhai. This has now evolved into a fully blown cycle club.

Now called the Mangawhai Rayders Cycle Club, they are an incorporated group affiliated to the national body and have membership up and running.

“We are a cycle club as many of us ride both road and mountain bikes and we would like to incorporate a BMX club if a track ever eventuates in Mangawhai,” says Sadie, suggesting perhaps they could be the driving force behind it. “Our constitution is to encourage and support all that involves cycling here in Mangawhai.”

The group has entered two races as the Mangawhai Rayders Cycle Club and have put the club on the map with several podium places. Recently they competed in the Fred Ogle Ride which is also the Northland Championships. The Rayders walked away with a first for the Womens M2 110km category (Sadie Parker), a first for the Mens M5-6 50km category (Gary Roper) and a 3rd in the U19 110km (Josh Eagle) and accompanied by several 4th placings as well.

Last weekend they took on the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge where over 8000 cyclists compete on one day. Their best result was a 6th in the Accumulator. A creditable outcome against 42 other teams. The club won best dressed team and club secretary, Sheila Davidson, received the Debbie Jaine award for overcoming adversity to complete the cycle race. Out of over 8000 cyclists the Mangawhai team were on the stage twice.

The Club has good support from local sponsors Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom, Smashed Pipi, Jackson Brown Automotive and Marine, Caci, Grind Coffee, Craig Cogan Builders, and Chillout Lodge.

Casual rides are on Sunday morning at 8.30am and leave from the Smashed Pipi cafe.
