Teddy tantrums send a messageAdding to the plethora of artists in the local area is UK migrant Andy Griffiths (the ‘real’ Andy Griffiths he insists).
Andy lives in Kaiwaka with wife Amy and two children – Josie aged 3 and Alex, 3 months. Currently a freelance cartoonist, web page and graphic designer for clients both here and overseas, Andy has formerly worked as an animation artist and illustrator for companies like Warner Bros (including the Looney Tunes movie Space Jam), Warner Bros, and Stephen Spielberg’s studios. Andy also takes cartooning workshops during the school holidays, usually from the Quarry Art Centre in Whangarei. The newest member of his family is Eddie the bad tempered teddy bear, Andy’s recently published picture book for pre-schoolers. “The idea came about when I was trying to keep my three-year-old daughter entertained by making up a story and drawing pictures for her to colour in,” says Andy. “I kept those original doodles and realised that I had the very rough beginnings of a children’s book. A few months later I had all the illustrations completed and decided to publish myself through Amazon’s print-on-demand service Createspace.” The book tells the humorous story of a teddy bear learning to overcome the frustrations of everyday life with some help from his friends while also learning a few lessons about controlling his temper along the way. It is set to be a series with book number two already on the drawing board. To avoid confusion with the Australian children’s author of the same name ‘Eddie’ is credited to Charles Griffiths, ‘Charles’ being his middle name. With Christmas approaching this could be a good stocking-filler currently available from Amazon. It will also soon become available from the www.thebookdepository.co.uk (Books ship free to NZ) and also as a digital download from Andy’s online store at www.zengrenade.com and you can choose to pay whatever you like for it!
