Donation helps MAZ go green

LEVELLED: Earthmovers work on what will become grassy MAZ sports and recreation grounds.

A recent donation of fertiliser from Quinphos to the Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitible Trust will ensure a newly-levelled field is completed with a lush growth of grass.

The new growth follows weeks of preparation with earthworks and levelling. 

The field is intended for use as a sports field, and eventually for summer concerts.

With earthworks making the park take shape the existing skate bowls are now complemented by a full-sized field, alongside a small children’s play area with equipment.

The children’s playground has had some equipment installed, and funding is being found for more. 

Earthworks included the creation of a double peak sand dune for children to play on, which is proving very popular.

Work is scheduled to start soon on a concrete pour around the skate bowls to create a flat area with obstacles for street skating.

So far the park provides a children’s playground, basketball court, car park, seating for a barbecue area, mountain bike tracks, walking tracks, and the largest skate bowl in the southern hemisphere.

“Thanks to community involvement and donations like the one from Quinphos this great community facility will give residents and visitors of all ages multiple outdoor options,” says MAZ Charitable Trust committee member Lara Iriarte.

“The park is turning into a great hangout for local kids who have shown a lot of respect for the community facility. Newly installed rubbish bins are being used well, and the park remains graffiti free.”
