ROGUE RUNNER: Local personality Cameron Shaw surprised friends and family by paying the entry fee and participating in the Top of the Rock run last weekend. Shaw, a self-confessed unfit 46-year-old did no training for the event, and is well-known for imbibing excessive amounts of beer in any company. However he completed the 10km run none the worse for wear. Shaw topped off the day by winning a Trek mountain bike compliments of My Bike, Whangarei. As much as he tried to convince friends that the bike was awarded for winning the race, it was in fact the coveted spot prize he won. Shaw has been spotted riding around Mangawhai Heads with his dog Jess in tow.

With close to 300 entrants, Kaiwaka Sports Association’s 2013 Top of the Rock multi-sport event was a great success, say organisers

A large number of locals were joined by competitors from as far afield as Hamilton and Whangarei.

TV3 personality Brendon Johnson presided over the prizegiving. Thanks to generous sponsors, there were over 80 prizes up for grabs.

Mangawhai Tyres kindly donated $50 for the oldest competitor. This was won by Maungaturoto's Trevor Brljevich who, at 82-years-old, completed the 5km walk.

The chocolate fish prize went to Jeff Stewart who was bandaged up from a bike accident the previous week, but still competed in the event.

This year saw over forty volunteers help run the event – the winner of the volunteers prize draw was Lindsey Hargreaves.

A lawnmower, generously donated by Steve from Kaiwaka Motorcycles was raffled off and went to Devon Neaves.

The main spot prize of an Avanti bike was won by a very appreciative Cameron Shaw, from Mangawhai.

Kaiwaka Sports Association president Evan Wright was given a gift in recognition of all the work that he and his wife Michelle put into organising the event.
