Did You Know.......MAZ growing to plan
The Mangawhai Bowl Jam held recently was deemed a great success, not only by those who competed, but by spectators and visitors who were impressed with the organisation of the event and standard of behaviour. Well done MAZ. The streetscape area is coming together with the new planting thriving with the help of drip feed irigation. Work is underway to clear the concrete court in preparation for 'Tiger Turf' laying along with the fencing for tennis, netball, whatever you wish. Young scooter riders are now using the snake path to ride along. MAZ has a master plan, and as funds permit, the streetscape will provide for all ages and stages. St John Ambulance Station, also sited on Mangawhai Community Park, is shaping up to be a very impressive building which will be able to cater for the inevitable population increase. Be a Friend of the Museum And at the other end of the park, Mangawhai Museum continues to receive accolades for telling the story of Mangawhai with such professionalism and energy. Blown away by Harvest Blue Harvest Blue – what a delight! Accompanied by discerning Auckland friends, we booked a table there on Saturday night to use a gift voucher we had been given for Christmas. We were blown away, for the food was not only superb (10 out of 10 Kris) the presentation was simply amazing. Malcolm is still drooling over the pork ribs in a rack, and the fries in an open newspaper wrap. The reconfigured outdoor area, just the right volume from the background guitar player, value, especially wine by the glass, and the high standard of service, all added up to a consensus from our group that Harvest Blue has ticked all the boxes in providing a top class dining experience. Cafe/bistro daily, dining Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Bird report from Sioux NZ fairy tern breeding season is drawing to a close, with the last chick banded and trying out its wings. Five birds fledged from Mangawhai this season, not a bad result given the weather conditions during the nesting period. All praise to the trapper and DoC staff who spend the summer trying to ensure the best results. And thanks also to the local people who respect the Wildlife Refuge, and those who contact DoC if potential problems are observed. NZFTCT raffle drawn The NZ Fairy Tern Charitable Trust fundaising raffle has been drawn, with Alan Mayo from Auckland winning first prize of a fairy tern painting, NZ bird book, and Bennetts Chocolates. Mat Vujcich (with a Warkworth phone number) drew second prize of a NZ bird book, NZ bird stamp pack and chocolates, third prize of a NZ bird book and chocolates going to Barbara and Warren Partington from Mangawhai. Funds raised are earmaked for predator control cameras. Did you know… … the minimum age for joining Seniornet Mangawhai is only 50? Annual membership is only $20, so what's holding you back? Who spotted this ‘possum patrol’ picture in the Sideswipe column, NZ Herald, February 11? Annie Kitchener, who gives the little dog his summer haircut, recognised him immediately, sending this little piece to the Focus: "I believe possum patrol has taken on a whole new dimension in Mangawhai – particularly in the rural areas, due to a certain young local border terrier called Barney. He has taken on the mantle of Mangawhai's chief canine possum hunter and eradicator, taking his title very seriously out in the back blocks of Mangawhai, mostly under the watchful eye of owner Ian (Box) Milestone. So, if you have a stray annoying possum lingering up your gum tree or munching through your ripening fruit, perhaps you could look to employing Barney's services. He'd be there in a flash!" John Lee took the photo while on his Mangawhai travels. News and views to share through this column? Contact Jo Roberts 431 4711, email jo.roberts@xtra.co.nz. |
