Mangawhai: The Walking Capital of New ZealandTroubadour Trail
Enjoy the return of the Japanese Drummers. Spend Friday afternoon walking the spectacular cliffs and beach of the estuary. Along the way stop and relax in the sun to watch and listen to entertainers. For $10 (at Alamar Boat Ramp on the day or tickets at Bammas or Mangawhai Books & Gifts) this is a great way to open the Weekend and enjoy outdoor entertainment. Departure times are 2.30, 3.00 and 3.30pm. Family tickets available. Boot Camp Large numbers of locals look forward to Thursdays when Shirley takes the popular fitness classes. At the Walking Weekend she will introduce a Boot Camp hour of circuit exercise that will also include walking. How about giving it a go? She will make sure you work at your own level. Your chance to experience this popular form of exercise in safe company. Food and Wine Festival The increasing range of locally grown produce will be reflected in the food available at the Food and Wine Festival – a wide variety of local food and drink will keep everyone satisfied. Dancing will be as vigorous as ever with the Mermaids to keep the afternoon swinging along. Tickets $25 at Bammas and Mangawhai Books & Gifts Web page Check the web page mangawhaiwalkingweekend.co.nz for the list of over 30 guided walks; too many to describe here. Walk numbers are limited with the Takekaha Falls Walk already full for both days. Book and pay online. Collect a Mangawhai Walking Weekend brochure from the Mangawhai Information Centre or local shops. Art trail The Mangawhai Artists studios and display venues will be open for their biannual Art Trail. This is a special part of the total Walking Weekend. Marunui Conservation Once a year this private conservation block opens its gates to the people of the district. In April last year Marunui took in the first brown kiwi to be released in Northland. Again this year at the Mangawhai Walking Weekend Marunui is offering two walks that meander through their loved and precious bush. On Saturday (Brynderwyn Bush Tramp to Marunui Trig) there is the climb to their pa site and on Sunday (Kiwi Country) the walk is gentler along the lower slopes. Book on these walks and you will meet the owners and hear the passion for their land. ■ Further details contact Jean Goldschmidt 431 5096. |
