Safer speed limit for Mangawhai Heads RdWhile constantly travelling the same road, we often don’t initially see or take note of changing road signs which, in this case show an important change to the speed limits along Mangawhai Heads Rd now reduced to 50km/h, down from 70km/h.
Local mum of two Ruth Stitt has been working with the Kaipara District Council for almost a year trying to get it changed to a safer limit with the pleasing result that temporary signs are now up with permanent ones to come once bylaw changes are ratified. “This one hits home for me as I just lost my brother Matt a month ago in a motorcycle accident,” says Ruth. While we tend to attribute every motorcycle accident or death to speed it is important for all drivers to take heed of speed limits to lessen the likelihood of any accident and it’s to this that Ruth draws our attention. “I would hate for someone to get hurt by speeding on this road and feel the pain I am currently feeling,” says Ruth, who is understandably raw with the loss of her brother but also aware of the need to protect her two young children. As Mangawhai builds up and traffic flow increases, drivers need to become more aware of speed limits not just during holiday times when numbers of visitors are walking to and from the beach and shopping centre, but at all times. Drivers need to realise that the casual approach that has been adopted over the years by those travelling this route on a regular basis now requires a lesser speed and a little more attention. |
