ED SAID - Resolutions made to be broken
Someone wished me ‘Happy New Year’ just the other day. It sounded funny with New Year seemingly now ages ago; so far so that most of us have probably broken our New Year resolutions or not yet started as in ‘diets always start next week’ and ‘giving up drink after the next long weekend.’ Tradition dictates that every 365 days you should try to kick bad habits and start your life anew. So said the two-faced Janus, the God of beginnings and endings and after whom January was named by the Romans. In short, a New Year's resolution is simply something that goes in one year and out the other. Personally I can make commitment towards a goal without it being a NYR but then I don’t feel one ounce of guilt if I later decide I’m too damned lazy to follow through with it. If it’s not a NYR then it’s probably an item on your ‘bucket list’. I understand the concept of this but what happens when you complete all the tasks thereon? Are you then expected to simply ‘kick the bucket’? On the other hand it may be nice passing through the pearly gates knowing you had achieved every task your mortal life allowed. Anyway it will come as no surprise to know that 95 percent of people have weight loss at number one on the top ten list of NYR’s. Number two is a pledge to get fit and number three is to eat healthier. Saving money comes in at number four, getting a new job is number five, while spending more time with people who matter (family and friends presumably) is number six. Number seven is helping someone less fortunate than yourself, and number eight is getting out of a rut though probably if you achieve those listed beforehand this one will be reached automatically. At nine is visiting another country, and ten is to read more books. With regard to number one, most will have abandoned the quest within a month and of those who begin in earnest, most will not carry through to their goal. In the end I doubt anyone takes them too seriously, especially this person (see image) who shall remain nameless and who just modifies things from year to year according to their personal situation. Enjoy. Oh, and regardless of how good last year was, we hope this one will be even better. Rob & the team. |
