Boaties need to learn rules on waterIt’s the time of year when our seas and lakes are full of people and pleasure craft, so there is no more important time to follow water and boating safety rules.
With a number of errant fishos and boaties making the news lately it’s no surprise when it happens in our own back yard. After posting their complaint on Facebook, a concerned Mangawhai citizen sent us this picture of what they describe as a ‘jetski hoon’ leaving the Mangawhai estuary. According to the observer, the ignorant rider (the man pictured driving the ute) took his jetski through the estuary, for the second day in a row, with no regard to speed limits or other water users. Northland maritime rules state that jet ski riders have to observe the same rules as boats, in this case a 5 knot speed limit within 200 metres of shore and 50 metres of another vessel or person. For information about safe boating, local rules and tide tables visit the Northland Regional Council website at www.nrc.govt.nz/onthewater, or pick up a copy of the NRC Boating in Northland booklet. |
