Salsa and sculpture event set to swing!Millars Vineyard on King Road is set to burst into life on Northland Anniversary Weekend Sunday with an eclectic mix of wine, dance, music and art among the vines.
Organiser Annie Kitchener has again formulated a wonderful mix of cultures in her fundraising efforts on behalf of the Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Service. The service has recently announced it has attended a record 100 call-outs in 2013. “For a dedicated team working under what is often difficult conditions at their existing ‘red stickered’ fire station this is particularly commendable so they need all the support the community is able to give,” says Annie. “Things like a defibulator, an improved water pump and even road cones are all essential pieces of equipment necessary to better service the community.” Though the organising has taken many hours, Annie freely acknowledges the wonderful help she has had from a variety of areas in preparation for the big event. Firstly, the live music will be magic, upbeat and festive. Latin duo Chico Con Tumbao will perform and captivate everyone with their unique, effervescent music and style. Originally from Columbia and Chile the group has played extensively in NZ at big events like the Rugby World Cup, Music In The Park, and the Auckland Salsa Ball. They promise to deliver some of the very best Latin American guitar and congas music you are likely to hear. Artist Greg Straight has been surfing at Mangawhai Heads “since he was 12 years old” and is one of the professional artists who will be exhibiting and selling their work at this special event. Greg recently exhibited his Endless Summer collection in Auckland. Sculpture will also have a high profile. Among others, young master potter Jesse Foote from Morris & James Pottery, Matakana is producing a special ‘one off’ sculpture to be displayed and sold at this special event. Morris & James Pottery are supporting the event by providing another standard line piece to be auctioned. A silent auction of various goods and services will also take place, with the major event auction taking place at the end of the afternoon which will include original art and items from generous sponsors. Says Annie: “Along with local wines, beer, and water flowing – plus genuine Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade firemen on the BBQ cooking salsa treats, I’m sure that there will be something for everyone attending to enjoy and to make this event a really successful enjoyable afternoon.”
