The $10K boar hunt is onA $10,000 prize pool means hunters will be like pigs in mud at this years Point Curtis Cruising Club Boar Hunt.
Now in its third year, the Point Curtis Cruising Club has stepped their fundraising boar hunt up a notch – or two. Organiser and hunter Vic Birkenhead has this year reached some important targets. “Thanks to great support from sponsors we now have $10,000 worth of prizes and prize money and as some of the keen hunters travel big distances to take part, we have extended it by another day,” he says. The Hunt is now a three-day competition over August 8-10. Prizes will be well spread with the heaviest pig on each day being a winner. The longest tusks and mystery weight will also bring home the bacon, either cash, dog tucker or game gear packages. Rod and reel guys will be looking to bag a pheasant and snapper and the kids under 14 are also included with free entry but cash prizes for the biggest snapper, eel and possum. Vic recently judged the Tangiteroria competition and was surprised by the number of boars landed. “Fifteen good pigs were caught so they’re definitely out there,” he says “and with three days for the Kaiwaka hunt I’m sure there will be some really good pigs caught anywhere between the Far North and the Coromandel.” As usual the final weigh-in and prizegiving will end in a social gathering and Kaiwaka’s 3 Furlongs Hotel will put on a wild pork or lamb spit roast meal, plenty of beverages and entertainment. Tickets available from 3 Furlongs Hotel, Wellsford Sports & Leisure, Thirsty Liquor Wellsford, Hikurangi Hotel, Maungaturoto Hotel, Aratapu Tavern, Paparoa Hotel, Game Gear Warkworth, Matakana Butchery and Tangiteroria Tavern.
