visitor gives Mangawhai ‘seal’ of approval

An unusual holiday visitor to Mangawhai has parked itself quite happily in Mangawhai’s Picnic bay area. For the past week, and in the wake of the recent storm, a young fur seal has been enjoying sunning itself on the rocks and paddling in the tide completely oblivious to its surroundings.

“Although we haven’t seen a fur seal this close for some time it’s not unusual to spot them on head Rock from time to time,” says local resident Anthea Searchfield.

The seal appeared somewhat tired when first spotted, possibly having been buffeted about by the stormy weather, but now seems in good spirits and happy to have a sunny rock all to itself.
