New horizons for studentsA large group of Rodney College students and two supporting adults travelled to Rawhiti in the Bay of Islands for a three day tramp to Cape Brett and Whangamumu Harbour in late June. Chasing Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards, the journey was practice for the students as they prepared for their end-of-year qualifying tramps where 10 will qualify for gold awards in the South Island and six for silver awards at Lake Waikaremoana later in the year. Superb weather allowed spectacular views on the sometimes gruelling eight hour, 16 kilometre walk along the Cape Brett track, with the students testing their mapping and navigational skills. The group staying overnight at the old lighthouse keepers’ house which is administered by the Department of Conservation. The lighthouse started operation in 1910 and is now registered as a place of outstanding historical significance with the Historic Places Trust. Pictured is student Zane Carter enjoying the Cape Brett vista where the track ends below the lighthouse. |
