School embraces Whare WanangaLast year saw the formation of a Whanau Support Group at Mangawhai Beach School – a diverse group made up of community leaders, Kuia Kaumatua, parents and school representatives. This group sought to address the interests of Maori and non-Maori students who wish to attain an understanding of identity, culture and language.
A need was identified for a centre point in which to realise this vision and so a proposal for a Whare Wananga (a house of learning) was made to the Board of Trustees. It is envisaged that the Whare Wananga will be used for the learning of Maori language, weaving, carving etc. As opposed to a Marae, a Whare Wananga has the ability to merge school and cultural requirements without the strict protocols of a Marae being in place. Due to flexible kaupapa, the school will retain the use of this building as an after school care facility and as an extra classroom when required. Students will be responsible for the crafting of the tukutuku panels, kowhaiwhai and the carvings. Also in the plans is a Waharoa (entry way) and a blessing was held for this site last Thursday (pictured above) which will only enhance powhiri’s when guests are welcomed to the school. |
