Local Vocals have something to sing about

denis newhookLocal residents will soon have another opportunity to participate in group singing, with the Local Vocal Choir.

The Local Vocal Choir (LVC Inc.) developed from the original Wellsford Community Choir project, a 10 week singing series funded by Creative Communities Auckland in 2012.

The popular singing project concluded with a successful community performance at the Wellsford District Community Centre last November and showcased various genres of songs in four part harmony.

Choir members of all ages came from the extended Wellsford area, Matakana, Leigh, Warkworth, Wellsford, Kaipara Flats, Kaiwaka, and Mangawhai. The beginners ukulele group also performed.

By the beginning of 2013, the LVC Inc. society was founded and currently has around 45 financial members. The choir committee have successfully applied for more funding this year.

Choirmaster Max Maxwell of Singforjoy is once more leading the Sunday afternoon singing series, working alongside and mentoring the choir’s developing leader Denis Newhook.

Max believes that we all have a voice, and singing in harmony with a group is an uplifting experience that often inspires confidence. He is mentoring Denis to take over the leadership of the Local Vocal Choir. Denis has been taking part in many training activities to develop the multiple skills needed. Both men share a passion for facilitating group singing.

The Local Vocals will sing in the programme at the official opening of the new Wellsford Library complex on Saturday June 22nd in a free public concert.

There will be an opportunity for people to come along and join in with singing on Sunday June 30 from 2-4pm. Just bring along a gold coin donation and the desire to sing! No experience is needed and there are no auditions.

The series begins Sunday July 21, running 10 consecutive weeks every Sunday 3-5pm at the Wellsford District Community Centre, finishing with a concert on September 22. Register interest at singlvc@gmail.com.

Find the Local Vocal Choir Inc. on Facebook www.facebook.com/singlvc.

Max Maxwell also will again be offering ukulele classes which will run over the same 10 week period, before the choir sessions. Contact Max directly at www.singforjoy.org.nz.
