Mud runners about to get down and dirtyWe all know well the phrase and the song ‘mud, mud, glorious mud’ but ‘getting down and dirty’ is set to take on a literal meaning as Waipu group comprising farm owner Sue Mathews, Sharon from Smart Fitness, and Juanita and Richard from Waipu 4 Square have stepped away from summer entertainment in engineering a new winter activity: The Waipu Mud Run. Mud Runs are a worldwide phenomenon and each often has a theme. For this event contestants must wear a garment of tartan in keeping with the month-long Waipu in Tartan celebrations. Two courses each of four or eight kilometres on the South Rd property bring a whole new meaning to cross-country as competitors have to navigate soggy winter farmland, jumps, water hazards, ditches, cargo nets and, of course, mud! That deep, oozing smelly stuff that only the brave or silly will attempt to cross or wade through in mid-winter. While it is a fun event and the fastest might not necessarily be the ultimate winner, depending on the weather it can become something of a war of attrition so part of competitors’ kit should comprise thermal gear, a towel and a warm change of clothing. Hot showers will be available. The brave (or foolhardy) need to check out Highland Rough Stuff on facebook or email highlandroughstuff@yahoo.co.nz for full particulars and entry details. Only 100 entries will be accepted for the inaugural event. Circle Saturday 6 July on your calendar – if you dare!
