Choir to sing songs of freedom

Tara Moyle 2(copy)The Local Vocals Choir (LVC) is going from strength to strength with an energetic showcase performance planned for Sunday July 6. The theme this year is Songs of Freedom and promises to be an uplift-ing and liberating experi-ence say organisers.

The LVC began in 2012 as the Wellsford Community Choir, and became an incorporated society in early 2013 with the aim to get people singing and bring the wider community together.

“This year, LVC has reached out to encourage children in the district to express their ideas and feelings about freedom and being free,” says Sally Randall LVC President.

Artwork selected by their school teachers will be displayed in the foyer of the Wellsford district community centre from 6.30pm the evening of the LVC Songs of Free-dom concert. Some work will also be displayed in the Wellsford Library from June 22.

Prizes for the primary and intermediate categories have been donated by iCater of Wellsford. Prize-winners will be chosen by three local artists.

Creative Communities Auckland has again generously given funding for the third annual 10 week community singing programme. LVC sing once more under the expert leadership of Max Max-well and trainee choir leader Denis Newhook. Emergent leadership is encouraged, with each section of the choir hav-ing leaders this year.

The choir has learnt an array of song genres, all with the freedom theme, sung in four-part harmony (bass, tenor, alto, and soprano), with several smaller group items from members of the choir included in the programme. The show has Geoff Pickstone of Port Albert as MC.

The Wellsford Ukes are back by popular demand, and will perform a few robust sing-a-long numbers.

“We will have a digital image show of children’s art work projected behind the singers throughout the concert, along with images of the young artists’ words describing freedom and how it feels. We will have around 60 singers on stage, it will be brilliant!” says Sally

This year’s performance is at the Wellsford District Community Centre. Doors open 6.30pm, concert starts at 7pm, with gold coin do-nation at the door.
