New eatery adds spice to WaipuThe name ‘Madly Indian’ may conjure up all sorts of weird and wonderful apparitions in the mind’s eye. ‘Weird’ maybe, but most certainly wonderful, full-bodied, pungent, spicy and real Indian cuisine. It’s a name once heard is not easily forgotten.
The former Artform building in the centre of Waipu is once again bustling with activity as staff busy themselves preparing an array of dishes which are new to Waipu. The philosophy is simple. “We do authentic Indian food, and we do it well,” says owner SK Sharma (known simply as ‘S-K’) who owns a similar establishment in Kerikeri and also Madly Indian takeaways in Mangawhai. He has full confidence in his chef Dhan Singh who has 20 years experience including 5-star hotels. Blending the right spices for that traditional Indian experience is important but chef will temper curries to the customer’s taste. The open kitchen makes the atmosphere more personable. Staff can be seen at work making your naan bread and preparing your meal. Intended to be mainly dine-in, the demand has already created a strong takeaway following and complimentary poppadoms and chutney are served while waiting for your meals or order. Morning coffees are on the way shortly. A wide and varied menu covers from appetisers to mains of fish, prawns, platters and kebabs but with no dish priced over $20 must surely be a drawcard for winter family dining. There are also 50 gluten-free recipes plus a number of vegetable-only dishes but imbued with curry leaves, ginger and vindaloo paste for the true Indian flavour. Dessert of Gulab Jamun, a deep-fried sweet dumpling in syrup and, with a liquer, could be that prefect end to a meal. Something different for that special occasion, Madly Indian also offers an outdoor catering service. Open 11- 2.30pm for lunch, 4.30pm till late for dinner, to date full houses and lots of empty dishes are equal to satisfied diners. Go a little bit mad – try it. |
