New MHVLS lifeguards boost service

Over the course of the 2022/23 summer season, we welcomed 23 new lifeguards to the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifesaving Service (MHVLS) whanau. Since qualifying, many have attended additional training opportunities, developing their skills in fields such as inflatable rescue boat (IRB) crewing, rock rescues and first aid. Becoming a lifeguard is challenging and requires commitment over the summer months, culminating in a theory test, practical tasks as well as various pool and ocean based components. Congratulations to all our new members.

In addition, five of our younger members – Poppy Cameron, Tom Cullen, Archie Atkinson, Caleb Yeo and Alisha Moir – have been selected to attend the Surf Lifesaving Northern Region Youth Development Camp at Motutapu Island in April. This camp provides an outstanding opportunity for young lifeguards to develop leadership skills aligned with the values of surf lifesaving through theory sessions and action-packed outdoor activities.
