Marsden Cove comp biggest in country say organisers

fishing comp(copy)A 10.85 kg snapper caught from a kayak has taken out the major prize at the Century Batteries Beach and Boat Fishing Competition held last weekend at Marsden Cove Marina.

Jai Sanders landed the winning snapper from his kayak to win the heaviest snapper prize including a Kawasaki jetski and also putting him in contention to win the Snapper World Cup – the first person to win the cup fishing from a kayak.

“Despite the adverse weather, entries were up 30 percent on the previous year,” said organiser David Baty. “The attraction of the two Surtees/Honda boat packages and the three chances to win Ford XLT Rangers really fired up the entries. The Waikato took out both packages with both winners coming from Hamilton.”

The Century Batteries Beach and Boat is held each year at Marsden Cove Marina – 30 minutes south of Whangarei. The next event in 2015 will be the 10th running of the competition.

Rugby league and fishing legend Andrew Ettingshausen attended the event for the first time, filming a documentary for Australian television.

“Apart from being unable to register a score in the speed passing contest, Andrew was a huge hit with the fishermen, he took two local children from Ruakaka out fishing for the day to film a segment for his show,” said organiser Dave Baty. “Andrew was blown away by the size of the event and the fantastic atmosphere.”

This year’s event saw the first freedom camping area close to the main marquee.

“The camping area was a huge success and was utilised by over three hundred campers,” said Mr Baty.

Over 100 juniors entered the contest this year whilst entries from women were also well up on past years.

The Century Batteries Beach and Boat is the largest fishing contest in New Zealand. Next year’s event being the 10th running will be well attended.

“We are planning now for 2015 ensuring all those who wish to attend will be accommodated and well looked after,” said Dave Baty.
