Warkworth teen wins top award

Life Skills Camp cropped(copy)Local Warkworth teenager Bridgette Pride has taken out the ultimate prize of ‘Overall Top Student’ at the recent Blue Light Life Skills Camp held at the New Zealand Defence Force base in Hobsonville, Auckland in February. She beat a strong group of young people from the upper North Island to take the prize on the week-long residential course.

“Bridgette was presented the award as camp staff felt that she had showed maturity, intuition, excelled as a team member, displayed positive qualities of leadership and was respectful towards staff and fellow course members and most of all exemplified the qualities and attitudes the course aims to instil,” said Blue Light Life Skills Co-ordinator, Valerie Tiatia Seath.

The program is run by New Zealand Blue Light in partnership with the NZ Police and NZ Defence Force, and provides 14–17 year olds with a residential-based course delivering quality life skills and leadership training.

The program specialises in building self-respect, respect for others, and working within boundaries, self-care, team work and problem solving.

Blue Light has a strong vision of empowering youth. All Blue Light programs and activities are designed to reduce the incidence of young people being an offender or victim of crime and to encourage better relations between young people, their parents, the police and communities we live in.

Up to 19 courses are held each year in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. For more information about the Blue Light Life Skills Camps visit www.bluelight.co.nz or call (09) 475 9301 to request a 2014 brochure.
