Master craftsman debuts at Mangawhai Art TrailFrom the rugged mountains of the Austrian Alps, to the wide open seascape of Mangawhai, the 360 degree lifestyle change for Jakob Gruener of Zimmermann Jack woodworking could not have been more extreme.
Born and raised on a traditional Austrian farm at an altitude of 1930m, Jakob grew up in a home where his mother still churns her own butter, and where the mountains are so steep the only way to cut the grass is with a traditional Sic. It was in this rugged alpine environment that Jakob learnt his craft of woodworking after leaving school. Building projects in such an environment have their own special challenges – like snow for seven months of the year. One of Jakob’s greatest achievements was building the Brunnenkogel Haus at 2870m, perched on the mountain summit. His individual woodworking designs reflect the spectacular surroundings of his home in the Tyrolean Alps, where tradition meets functionality in a craft that is truly an art form. In stark contrast to the Tyrolean Alps, Mangawhai – with its endless golden beaches and wide open spaces – has quickly been adopted as home for the Gruener Family. Jakob has been working on construction projects since he arrived in New Zealand and quickly earnt the reputation of building to outstanding quality standards. His passion for woodworking as an artform has followed him from Europe. With fresh inspiration from his new home and the incredible wood species available, it was quickly clear that Jakob would set up his own shop in Mangawhai offering clients European-quality pieces of exceptional beauty and functionality. Zimmermann Jack - Master craftsman and woodworker is located at 115 Black Swamp Road in Mangawhai. Zimmermann Jack builds custom furniture from large chunks of sustainably harvested wood sourced from all over the North Island. Jakob uses macrocarpa, rimu, totara and kauri. His trademark designs maximise the raw, natural glory of the woodgrain; knots, live edges and all. Whether its a new dining or coffee table, entrance sideboard, or a bespoke outdoor table set to enjoy the long summer days, Zimmermann Jack will work closely with you to ensure you own a heritage piece that you will truly enjoy. The upcoming Mangawhai Art Trail provides the perfect platform to officially launch Zimmermann Jack. His open workshop will showcase his pieces and give the public an opportunity to meet the Austrian himself. He is looking forward to meeting you.
