Guides talk the walkVolunteer guides gathered recently to attend a special Mangawhai Walking Weekend guide training workshop.
There’s no monthly meetings for this lot, who get together only the once to prepare and plan for Mangawhai’s most logistically challenging event of the year. “It is the one time we meet before the actual Mangawhai Walking Weekend event, a time when we can become acquainted with all the other wonderful people who have volunteered to be guides,” says head organiser Jean Goldschmidt. “We gather as a community of like-minded people with the focus on continuing to strive for improvement in our skills, to understand more of what is expected both of the guides and the walkers they are leading, and to gain the confidence that is required to lead unknown people out into the bush, the countryside and the beach.” It is a huge responsibility that is not to be taken lightly, says Jean. Walkers need to register for events in confidence knowing they will be in safe and competent hands. Several new guides will join the group this year and are learning the ropes from the more experienced, who all have stories to tell! |
