Impact on community rewardedIn recognition of her years of community service, Christine Bygrave was presented with a yellow rose plant by Mangawhai Zonta Club president, Jan Barnett, and yellow rose certificate by Kay Hurley to mark International Women's Day at a breakfast meeting at Harvest Cafe in Mangawhai in early March.
International Women's day has been celebrated on March 8 since the early 1900's and was officially recognised by the UN Women's Organization in 1975. The day is globally celebrated by members of Zonta as Yellow Rose Day to acknowledge the achievements of women of the past and celebrate the progress women are making today. Christine Bygrave is a worthy recipient of the award being a founding member of the Kaiwaka St John and Hakaru Pony Club. As well as being an active member of both Plunket and Play Centre, Christine also sat on the Wellsford Co-op Parish council for 10 years and Hakaru churches for 20 years. She was the first woman president of the Mangawhai Golf Club and as president of the Mangawhai Historical Society has been a driving force for fundraising for the Mangawhai Museum and other community services. Part of this was establishing The Mangawhai Singers who were persuaded to sing at the breakfast meeting. At another breakfast meeting in Wellington hosted by the Minister of Women's Affairs, fellow New Zealander Lyn Mckenzie, the current International Zonta president, announced the International Honorary membership to the Zonta organization of Dr Marilyn Waring in recognition of all her work in helping to advance the status of women. - Corralie Betts DRIVING FORCE: Pictured at the Yellow Rose presentation are, from left, Kay Hurley, award recipient Christine Bygrave, and Jan Barnett. |
