Success for Mangawhai at homeThe Champion of Champions event for the season ended at the Mangawhai greens last weekend. Fifteen clubs competed in the mens section and the final between Mangawhai and Onerahi resulted in a win for Mangawhai and a first gold star for Paul Wightman.
Represented by Graham Wintle (skip), Len Bird (two) and Paul Wightman (lead), Mangawhai scored on the first three ends to get out to a handy 6-0 lead. A four on the 8th end took their lead out to 12-4 with Skip Wintle playing some outstanding draw shots to get them out of trouble and it was all uphill for Onerahi. After 13 ends it was 16-6 to Mangawhai and the writing was on the wall. The game ended as it started with Wintle again drawing the shot when he was three down and giving Mangawhai a 19-11 win. This was a first centre win for Wintle and a first senior title for Bird. Onerahi was represented by Ian Bowick (skip), Bruce Horscroft (two) and Ian Halls (lead).
