District water conservation must continue says KDC
Kaipara residents have made good reductions in the amount of water they use but need to continue their conservation efforts until there is significant rain say the Kaipara District Council.
Two and a half months of almost record low rainfall have put council water supplies in a critical state, forcing the Kaipara District Council to introduce a district-wide ban on hoses and sprinklers and urge residents to consider all possible ways of conserving water.
Dargaville’s consumption has reduced by an impressive 20 percent but the town is not out of the woods yet. The Waiatua Dam which boosts flow in the Kaihu River to provide for Dargaville’s summer needs is down to one third of its capacity and close to the minimum operational level.
Recent rain has failed to alleviate the situation. “Most of the district received between 10mm and 20mm which just wasn’t enough to make a difference,” says General Manager of Operations, John Burt. "I want to thank everyone for their great efforts and for putting up with the inconvenience of restrictions and reducing water use but unfortunately this situa- tion will continue for a while yet.”
He urges everyone to attend to obvious things like leaks or dripping taps and to check the council’s web- site www.kaipara.govt.nz for ways to save water. Council warns that if the situation deteriorates further mandatory restrictions may have to be introduced.
