Joan says farewell to Mangawhai MarketBy Julia West
Joan Butland has been a stallholder at the Mangawhai Market for thirteen years.
Her stall is always the first one you see when entering the hall with its array of hand-knitted slippers, bonnets and baby wear, as well as homemade oven gloves and aprons. Joan runs the stall to raise funds for the Leprosy Mission and Partners with People in Poverty. Any items that don’t sell are then passed on to the Wellsford Hospice shop. Joan used to assist at the annual fundraiser for the Leprosy Mission held at the Wellsford Community Centre but a change of rules saw her set up her first stall at the market in Kaiwaka before it relocated to Mangawhai. “Because of new food regulations we couldn’t sell jams, cakes or preserves any more and so I had to find a new outlet,” says Joan. “Joan is a real gem,” says Marita Draper, Mangawhai Market coordinator. “She always arrives at the market before 7am on Saturdays to help set up the stalls and get the hall ready for business. We will be farewelling her at the market next Saturday and her friendly face will be missed by many.” Joan stresses that she has received “colossal support” from the Wellsford and Mangawhai communities in running her stall, from Colleen Cave who does all the knitting to those who donate items and provide her with help at the market. Joan will continue to sew cotton skirts and knickers for the Christian Mission in Chennai, India, as well as working for the Mission in Wellsford, where she has lived for the past 45 years.
