Surfs up at Waipu Cove Holiday Camp

Greer Flynn escaped from Auckland and, with business partner Lincoln  Phillips  and assistant   Kirsty  Vuletich,  has had the Waipu Surf Club rocking and fully booked all summer with special thanks   to   the   weather Gods.

Operating   from  next to Waipu Cove Store the team  is  gradually  working   on   establishing    a surf   shop,   fully  operational  for next  summer. For  now  though  it’s all bout surfing, with loads of kids from  Waipu and Bream  Bay schools  taking two-hour sessions.  The   kids   have   taken  to it like the  proverbial ‘duck to water’ says Greer.

“But  it’s not  just  for kids,” says Greer, whose two  daughters   are  also surfies.  “A lot  of Aucklanders  come  for  weekend  lessons  – it’s probably a more casual  atmosphere up here. The  forty  and  fifty-plus age  group   who  ‘always wanted  to learn  to surf’ now have more time and have lost any inhibitions of maybe looking a bit silly, but all get up on their boards in their first lesson.”

This is one activity here there’s no lack of  enthusiasm from  either teachers   or  pupils.   It’s all about fun, confidence and water safety. 

The next big event will be a school holiday camp for surfing kids.

“It will run for five days and four nights and there   has   already  been a lot of interest,” Greer adds.

Starting with a supplied  9-foot epoxy board and wetsuit with the surf only metres  away you’re good to go. Also  in  the  pipeline are birthday packages which include a two hour lesson and also team-building weekends.
