Local artist goes nationwideHandmade storytelling artist Mary Kelliher, noted for her historical handcrafted murals is now spreading her reputation and expertise throughout the country.
While her mural in the Mangawhai Museum gains much admiration, during February Mary unveiled her latest commission, that of the history of the textile industry in Kaiapoi, North Canterbury from the late nineteenth century until it closed in 1978. Mary’s display drew large crowds to the opening of the new Ruataniwha Civic Centre which was followed by workshops at Kaiapoi’s new art space ‘Art on the Quay’ where her exhibition ran throughout February. Mary’s imagination knows no bounds and her depiction of specific places and events is deftly told through knitting, cut-outs, toys, buttons, wool, string and various bit of clothing coupled with a fertile imagination that brings her tales to life for young and old alike. Taking her craft into schools has also met with great enthusiasm and success as, not only are the children keen to learn and take part in the construction of the murals but they also relate more readily to the historical significance of the works. Mary has now expanded her display into a tutorial which includes books and CDs especially written for each individual work and a number of libraries have taken a keen interest in the ‘stories’ for both their historic and educational value. Mary expects to be back in Mangawhai later this for a breather before embarking on another historic journey.
